Emmet: Can you tell me a bit about what you do and who you are?
Lemar: My name is Lemar. I make and produce music. I'm also a DJ, and I'm working on a live electronic act. I work under two names, Lemar and Lemarx.
Emmet: For how long have you been producing and DJing?
Lemar: For as long as I can remember. If we take it seriously, I would say the last six or seven years. Before that, I was already dabbling with it.
Emmet: What was the moment that actually took you into releasing music and getting recognised?
Lemar: It was a very long process. I was making stuff but not releasing it. I started a label, Self-Expression Records, to help me and my friends release some music. I have something coming up pretty soon, if I make the deadline next month.
Emmet: So you created your own record label? How did that process go?
Lemar: For a few years at ADE I sent demos to lots of big labels. I got feedback and they liked the music, but it didn't fit the label. Eventually, one of the label owners asked why I didn't start my own label. A few years later, I thought maybe I should do that.
Emmet: I'm also starting my own record label with a group of students. Do you have any tips or guidance?
Lemar: Right now, it's not a big label yet, but I hope it will grow. It's also a platform for podcasts; we record DJ mixes there and want to build a community. My tip would be to find something that inspires you, something original, and stick with it. Put as much love and energy into it as you can. Having your own creation can inspire you to put out things that are truer to you instead of being altered for another label.
Emmet: You said you approached big labels. Did you also look at smaller independent labels, and why did you choose the big ones?
Lemar: I chose the big ones because I like them, but during demo pitches at ADE I also went to smaller labels, so both big and small.
Emmet: So you did both?
Lemar: Yes. Because the sound is true to me and a bit different, I didn't find a connection, and eventually I grew tired of that.
Emmet: Thank you so much. That's about all I have.
Lemar: You're welcome.
